Am I wrong for wanting a commitment before moving in with my partner?

Main Post:

So I 29F and my partner 29M have been together for 1.5 years. We have a very good relationship and we’ve been through some good and bad patches and always come out better on the other side. We’ve travelled together several times and we’ve had all the life discussions (marriage time lines, kids, finances etc).

Recently we were discussing timelines (he initiated that he would want to propose within 2 years) and discussing how to balance finances (why does everything cost so much?).

Anyways I’ve had the boundary that I won’t move in with / buy property / combine finances with a man who is not committed to me (for me this would be engaged). This is my boundary - and I don’t think it’s right or wrong but it is what I’m comfortable with. And my partner respects that and even said he admired that view.

(This is in part because I’ve seen several friends waste half a decade with people who have no interest in progressing their relationships and it breaks my heart to see them wanting marriage and kids and getting nowhere).

Anyways - I was speaking with a friend (29F) the other night and I mentioned this conversation to her and she outright spat “That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard”.

I can’t really get it out of my head. So I wanted to ask, am I wrong to have that boundary? Is it “stupid” to want commitment before moving in together and financially entangling? I’d love to hear some other viewpoints on this.

Top Comment: It's not stupid at all. Keep enforcing your boundaries and ignore your friend.

Refusing to move in together?

Main Post: Refusing to move in together?

Top Comment:

Not unreasonable. Stand your ground! If you move in and he has unrestricted access to cooking, cleaning, and sex he will have no incentive to change things. You’ll have even less power because you’ll be dependent on him living in the house he bought. You’ll end up living together with no ring indefinitely if you move in like this.

My (23F) boyfriend (24M) won’t propose

Main Post:

Hi everyone, I (23 F) have been with my boyfriend (24 M) for almost 7 years. Since our first year together we’ve been talking about getting married, kids, a house..the works. It’s been almost 7 years and we moved into an apartment together about 6 months ago in another state for a job he was offered. We’ve talked many times about how we’re going to get married and what our wedding and future will be, but he mentions it seeming like we’re already married, so what’s the point? I’m confused and i definitely do want to marry him and spend forever with him, but I also want to have a ring and a wedding and a foundation for our future. We’ve talked about a long engagement, and that would be fine with me. He tells me frequently he can’t wait to get married...so what’s the hold up?? We’re financially stable, steady jobs, nothing standing in the way (that I’m aware of). I know the “don’t pressure it” but I’m kind of tired of waiting...it’s been a long time!

Men...what could be going through his head?

UPDATE: I feel like I’m getting a lot of hate, which is fine if that’s your perspective, I respect that. I sat with him and simply asked if he still wanted to marry me, to which he said he did. I then asked what’s holding us back? He “I haven’t proposed to you yet.” Me “When is that going to happen? If we already know...why not do it?” He “It will happen soon, love, I promise.” Lots of you were recommending I ask for a specific timeline, but he’s simply not that kind of person, so “soon” is a good thought for me. Thank you all for your input and recommendations. I appreciate it.

One commenter added that my title should be “My bf hasn’t proposed yet” instead of “won’t”. I completely agree with that statement and I was honestly in a bad mood and state of mind when I was posting this so the tone is different than I intended.

Top Comment: You guys are young, have really been adults for two to three years. Most of your time together has been spent as teenagers basically, a long time doesn't equate to maturity and preparedness in my opinion, but hopefully it works out for you guys. I personally don't know why he hasn't taken the leap, or maybe he's already planned it out but, good luck !

Top Comment: Yes say it now. You have the right to your boundaries. If you bringing it up scares him away - then he isn't serious. "He says he just wants us to be situated and be in the same space once we're engaged". Good - say once you are engaged you can be situated in the same place.
